Диалог

— Waiter, can we have the menu, please?

— Ah, here we are. Now, has everyone got one?

— Yes? Good. Now, what shall we order? Let’s take a look.

— Mmm... caviar, fresh tomatoes and pickles...

— We mustn’t forget chips, for Judy. Isn’t it true that in England you have chips with everything? Usually covered in tomato sauce?

— Now, you know that’s not true! Obviously we don’t have chips for starters or dessert. But in some small caf?s we often have chips with the main course.

— So I hear: fish and chips, chicken and chips, egg and chips, sausage and chips, hamburger and chips...

— Well, there’s no problem with starters here. But what shall we have for the main course? I’m hungry!

— How about chicken kiev? I’ll order that.

— I’ll try the sturgeon. It looks good.

— I think I’ll have the shashlyk. What about you, Judy?

— Ummm... I don’t know... I can’t make up my mind...

— Come on, Judy, this is your last chance to try the delights of Russian cuisine.

— OK, I’ll have the sturgeon, too.

— Yes, this is everyone’s last chance to enjoy Russian food. No doubt English food is very good and wholesome. But, you have to admit it, after 45 days abroad... chips will be very boring!

— Now, Eugene, stop pulling my leg. English food is fine and you’ll find it very tasty!

— I’m sure I will. Well, has everyone ordered? What about you, Olev? You haven’t chosen anything yet?

— ( to the waiter ) Is there a vegetarian dish?

— There’s only fruit salad and vegetable salad but no main dish, I’m afraid.

— I’ll have sturgeon then.

— Are you a vegetarian, Olev?

— Well, yes, but not a strict vegetarian. I sometimes eat fish and eggs.

— As far as I can judge, it’s not very easy to be a vegetarian here, is it?

— That’s true.

— I don’t think you’ll have any problems in Britain. There are many vegetarian caf?s and restaurants and every ordinary one has some vegetarian dish, as a rule.

— I hear there are many vegetarians in the UK and their number is growing fast.

— Oh yes. It’s sort of fashionable nowadays and some people turn vegetarian to keep up with the times but many of my friends have been vegetarian for years.

— What about nitrates? They are dangerous, aren’t they? Have you this problem here?

— Of course, we have but as for me, I like organically-grown food. I grow my own carrots, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes and also many herbs. But getting good food is a problem.

— We have special shops where you can buy organically-grown food but they are more expensive, of course. Anyway, you’ll see everything for yourself. Is this going to be your first trip abroad?

— No, but I have never been to England before and I’m looking forward to it very much.

— I’m going abroad for the first time in my life and somehow I’m very nervous.

— What a thing to say! You’re going on a summer course for six weeks only. You’re not going to defect! You’ll see: time flies when you’re enjoying yourself.

— Oh, I don’t know. Two months is a long time when you’re away from your family. I’m going to miss my son badly. I’m going to be very lonely.

— Boris, you can’t be serious. There are so many interesting places to see in Britain. The time will pass very quickly.

— London’s certainly worth visiting.

— I’m sure it is. But I’m still going to feel homesick. Two weeks wouldn’t be so bad, but six weeks is too long for me.

— Ah, Boris thinks he’s the only one to be homesick. But I understand and share his feelings. You see, I’m going to live and work in Africa for two years. I’m going with my family, but I’m not looking forward to being away from my parents and friends. I’ll miss them badly.

— Oh, but that’s for two years. Two years is a totally different kettle of fish.

— True. But then there’s the climate in Africa, which won’t suit us very well. I can’t stand the heat, you see. And then there’s the food, which will be very different.

— Yes, but you’re going to work there, not to have a holiday, and African countries need doctors. These small difficulties shouldn’t put you off.

— Oh, I agree. And in many ways I’m going to enjoy my stay in another country. It’s very exciting. But I will miss my friends. That’s only natural.

— I understand that many future specialists from Africa are trained in Russia. Isn’t there a special university...?

— That’s right, young people, from Africa and elsewhere, study at Lumumba University, here in Moscow. But we need to train specialists on the spot. That’s why I’m going there. It’s a great challenge.

— Can’t we stop talking shop? After all, we’re in a restaurant.

— I agree, sorry, Judy, we’ve got no manners. You’ll think we’re all workaholics.

— Don’t apologise; your work sounds very interesting.

— Well, we enjoy our work. But we also like to relax. And we’re connoisseurs of good food, as you’ll see. Waiter, bring us the best you have. We want to make our meal unforgettable.

— Oh, but I must stick to my diet.

— Me too. I’m trying to fight the flab.

— Oh come on! Worry about your diets tomorrow.

— Yes, our worries usually begin the morning after...
