Instead of talking shop, let’s talk about what we do in our free time.
By the way, it goes well with the food, which is delicious.
Can you give us some advice?
Sure. If you have any questions, fire away, don’t be shy.
How do the British spend their spare time?
Do they have enough time for leisure activities?
You must be joking!
Are you kidding?
As far as I know, you can never have enough of it (free time).
Those who work get very tired.
As a rule, they don’t go out (they stay at home) during the week (on weekdays).
The weekend is a different matter, of course.
But even that depends...
It depends on many things and in the first place on the person’s character.
It also depends on your age, on the family budget and other things.
That’s why it’s difficult to generalise.
All right. Let’s be more precise.
Where do the teenagers go when they want to enjoy themselves?
They may go to a disco or a pub.
Or to a party if someone is giving one.
The British like to spend their holidays abroad.
Mainly in Spain, France and Italy.
Judge for yourself.
According to statistics, about 10 to 15 million people go abroad each year.
One of the reasons is that it’s relatively cheap.
Besides, the British are eager to get away from the dreadful British weather.
However, not everybody goes abroad for their holidays.
Many holidaymakers go to the traditional seaside resorts, like Brighton or Scarborough.
Surely, you can have a very nice holiday in Britain, if the weather is kind to you.
But it’s a well-known fact that you can’t rely on British weather.
Therefore, to be on a safe side, it’s better to escape from the country for your holiday.
Tell me, what is the cheapest kind of holiday for a young couple with children?
Many families on a tight budget prefer to go camping or caravaning in Britain.
However, some package tours abroad are actually cheaper than holidays in Britain.
How come?
You know, the thing is, they often go to busy and crowded tourist resorts in Spain.
And now let’s talk about sport.
What kinds of sport are especially popular? Tennis?
The Wimbledon championship is known all over the world.
However, I wouldn’t say that tennis is Britain’s favourite sport.
Cricket is very popular in England and golf is equally popular in Scotland.
As for football (soccer) it’s popular everywhere.
Are there many fans of judo and karate in Britain?
Yes, judo is very fashionable these days, especially among the young.
Do you go in for anything in particular?
I play squash and go riding when I can.
I learnt to ride almost as soon as I could walk.
I’ve always been mad about horses.
But on the whole, I’m not a very sports-minded person.
I’m mainly an arm-chair sportswoman (sportsman).

— Mmm, the chicken’s delicious. How’s the steak, Victor?

— Very tasty; just how I like it. How’s the sturgeon, Judy?

— Lovely.

— I’m interested in what British people do in their free time. I hope we’ll also have some free time in England. Can you give us some advice, Judy?

— Sure. If you have any questions, fire away.

— Do the British have a lot of time for leisure activities?

— Mmm, that’s difficult to say. Many people who work are too tired to go out on weekdays, as a rule. The weekend is a different matter, of course, but even that depends.

— Depends on what?

— Oh, on many things. Young people may go to discos or pubs. Older couples, especially those with young families, might stay in and simply watch TV. Many people can’t afford to go out and socialize; others just don’t want to. And then there are people who are always out enjoying themselves. It’s difficult to generalise.

— But what do they do — the ones who go out?

— Well, I’ve mentioned discos and pubs. They’re very popular, of course. Then there are cinemas, theatres, sports centres, and so on. Or someone might give a party...

— What about holidays? I hear that the British like to spend their holidays abroad. Is that really so?

— Oh yes. We like to escape from the dreadful British weather! I think about 12 to 15 million people go abroad each year, mainly to Spain, France or Italy. Spain is the most popular destination, because it’s quite cheap and very sunny.

— Twelve or fifteen million. That’s about 30% of the population, isn’t it? What do the others do?

— Well, many holidaymakers go to the traditional seaside resorts, like Brighton, Bournemouth, Scarborough or Torquay. They might go to hotels, or guest houses with bed and breakfast. Some take self-catering holiday flats. It all depends on how much money you want to spend.

— What’s the cheapest kind of holiday for a young couple with children?

— Well, some package tours abroad are actually cheaper than holidays in Britain. But they often go to busy and crowded tourist resorts in places like Majorca. Many families on a tight budget prefer to go camping or caravaning in Britain. That’s nice and cheap, but, again, you can’t depend on the British weather.

— Have you ever been abroad, Judy? Apart from this tr

— to Russia.

— Yes, I've visiteed some European countries. I've been to Italy and Spain, and I've spent some time in France. I've got relatives in Canada, and so I've also visited them a few times.

— Oh, you’re very well-travelled!

— What about you, Svetlana? Have you travelled a lot?

— A little. I’ve been to Poland and Bulgaria, on business tr

—s with Igor. Oh, and we’ve been to India. We went there on holiday two years ago. This is our first tr

— to Britain, of course.

— Has anyone in the group visited Britain before?

— No, I don’t think so. Am I right? Has anyone been to Britain?

— No. We’ve never been to Britain before.

— Well, I hope the weather is kind to you.

— Judy, you mentioned sports centres, a few minutes ago. Do many people go in for sports in Britain?

— Oh yes, definitively.

— I understand that tennis is Britain’s favourite sport. I’ve read all about Wimbledon.

— Well, Wimbledon is a famous championship, but I wouldn’t say that tennis is our favourite sport. Cricket is very popular in England, golf is equally popular in Scotland, and the Welsh play a lot of rugby. Football, of course, is popular everywhere.

— In our country there are many fans of judo and karate. Is it the same in Britain?

— Oh yes, judo’s very fashionable these days, especially among the young.

— And you, Judy, do you go in for anything in particular?

— Well, I play a bit of tennis and squash, and I go riding when I can. I’ve also tried downhill skiing, although there isn’t much opportunity to ski in Britain. Our climate is too warm and wet. I like American football... on TV, of course! I’ve never played it. I’m mainly an armchair sportswoman.

— Where did you learn to ride? Not in London, surely.

— Some of my friends own riding stables just outside London, in Chorley Wood. And so I learnt to ride almost as soon as I could walk. I’ve always been mad about horses.
