— Oh yes, I love landscapes! I’m going to visit the National and Tate Galleries in London.
— Do you often have art exhibitions from abroad?
— Quite often. But it’s sometimes difficult to get in. You may have to queue up for hours!
— That’s true. People here spend too much time in queues.
— Svetlana and I are also very fond of music. We’re planning to go to the opera in Covent Garden.
— Ah, then you should meet Mary, Neil’s girlfriend. She’s a musician. She plays the piano. And she knows all about the musical scene in London. ( Turning to Neil. ) By the way, where is Mary? Isn’t she coming to see you off?
— Ah no, she’s got classes today. She teaches at the Conservatoire.
— Is Mary Russian?
— Yes, she was born in Moscow.
— How did you meet?
— Oh, she was in my English class last summer.
— Yes, it was love at first sight. That’s why Neil is still here in Moscow.
— When did you arrive in Moscow?
— Umm, I came here about 6 months ago.
— And how long are you going to stay?
— Well, my contract ends in another 6 months, but I’m planning to renew it for another year.
— Ah, it must be love! Tell me, does Mary take care of your social life here?
— Oh yes. We often go to concerts and to the ballet. And we occasionally go to the Bolshoi.
— Which do you prefer — opera or ballet?
— Well, actually, I prefer ballet. Russian ballet is amazingly beautiful.
— What about you, Judy?
— Oh, I went to the ballet a few times last week. I saw ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘The Nut-Cracker’ by Tchaikovsky. And then, a couple of days ago, Mary took Neil and me to see ‘Spartacus’ by Khatchaturian.
— And what about you, Svetlana? Do you often go to the ballet or the opera?
— No, I’m afraid I don’t go often. It’s not very easy to get tickets.
— Why’s that? Tickets are quite expensive, aren’t they? As far as I know, a seat in the Bolshoi may cost as much as 50 dollars.
— Yes, well, that’s the problem, you see. Prices aren’t cheap, yet the demand is high. Therefore tickets are hard to come by. What about Britain? Are theatre tickets expensive there?
— Well, it depends on the theatre, of course. But on the whole they’re quite expensive. In London’s West End, a seat in the stalls costs a fortune!
— Oh, Judy, I wish we could speak English like you!
— Ah, it takes time to learn another language. And you have to work hard too. But in England you’re going to have to speak English. And the more you practise, the more you learn.
— True, practice makes perfect, as they say.
