“It Is High Time” To Learn English Grammar
Sometimes English grammar rules can be really confusing. There is a way to make it clearer to ESL students, though. Let’s take a look at a few structures that you may start implementing into your speech right away.
If you read or hear a sentence starting from “it’s (high) time …”, most probably you’re in the middle of business or sarcastic conversation. We use this grammar structure to speak about something that is not late to do now, though it’s expected to have been done earlier.
Examples:
It’s high time you went to sleep = It’s time to go to sleep.
It’s time she completed the report.
It’s high time we arranged a trip to NYC.
NB! If the structure “it’s (high) time …” contains the word “high” most probably the speaker wants to express anger or complaint.
To speak about the past we, therefore, swap “is” with “was”.
Examples:
It was time you shared your thoughts when you got a chance to speak.
It was high time you got your health checked-up by professionals.
It was high time he went to college.
To memorize this grammar structure we offer to have a quick English test. Rewrite the sentences using “It’s high time + subject + Ved/2”.
Example: She should have cleaned her room — It’s high time she cleaned her room.
- We should have made breakfast.
- It’s time to check your knowledge by doing tests.
- We ran out of milk and cereals. Guess we should go to the supermarket.
