5 Tips On How to Turn Traveling Into Learning
Traveling is not only about taking pictures or staying in relaxing resorts, it can also be a fun way to get skills and educate yourself. Here are some tips on how to improve your English via traveling around the world.
Give it a go
Even if you estimate your English level as Beginner, don’t hold yourself back in traveling. While talking to the locals try to compose simple sentences and use vocabulary you already know. Practice makes perfect and once you give it a try you’ll see the improvement.
Travel alone
You don’t have to take the whole journey on your own. However, separating from your mates for some time can be truly beneficial for your communication skills in English. Start with little talks at the shops or ask somebody to give you directions to some famous sights.
Leave your books at home
It appears that a high level of insecurity regarding language skills among ESL learners comes from the fear to make mistakes. Most of these fears are connected with grammar rules and structure. We don’t want to say that learning English grammar brings no use. We just want to clarify that making mistakes helps you memorize the correct way of speaking faster. Moreover, while traveling take a chance to immerse yourself in spoken English, not into Grammar practicing with books.
Make notes
While you’re taking pictures and visiting museums, pay attention to the surroundings: billboards, ads, and conversations. It’s almost impossible to create a similar language environment when you’re back home. So take the best out of it. To make your observations more efficient for practicing, make notes on your phone or a pocket notebook. Most probably you won’t even look at them later. However, as it’s been scientifically proven, you’ll memorize things better.
Socialize
Leave your comfort zone and look for some social events in a city you travel to. Usually, they are advertised on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook. To get more courage and ideas for conversations with new people at the events visit this article about small talk.
The more you travel, the more you learn.
