5 Fascinating Words From “Avatar”
The science fiction world of Avatar impressed the audience not only with its magnificent scenes but also with the language that the main characters use. Let’s find out where this language comes from and learn a few phrases from the movie “Avatar”.
The Na’vi language represents Pandora’s culture, which is a mix of Christian, Hindu and Hebraic traditions.
Avatar
The word avatar has its roots in Sanskrit. It describes godlike beings taking human form to restore balance through good deeds. The idea to make the main characters blue and tall also comes from Indian mythology. These are the main features of the Hindu God Vishnu, who sustains the universe.
Na’vi
Na’vi comes from the Hebrew word “navi” which means “prophet”.
Tsaheylu
The word “tsaheylu” means “bond”. It's crucially important for the movie creators to define the meaning of “tsaheylu”. All Na’vi have a ponytail because one of its parts helps to create a connection with the other creatures. For instance, the creatures of Pandora use it to have “tsaheylu” with the Na’vi. It shows equality and respect towards each other, not a relationship between a master and a servant.
Skxawng
Not only good words were used by the Na’vi. For instance, “skxawng” is translated as “moron” or “an idiot”. As you can see there is nothing flattering about such a term, but it’s still better than being called “tawtute” (“skyperson”) which truly means “invader”.
Oel Ngati Kameie
This phrase was commonly used among Na’vi as a greeting. In English, it means “I see you”. Despite its translation, it has much more meaning. When one says “Oel Ngati Kameie” to the other, they show their endless respect. It means they see each other’s souls, not just a physical existence in front of them.
