Elena Grichik

Elena Grichik

Vladimir Belikov

Btw..я живу в IN, Carmel.
I am just saying.
Alla Kabernyuk
Iz Sankt-Peterbyrga? C ziry becimcj, pravda! Voobce iz Rossii ceichac malo kto yezaet, c Pitera tochno! V Colorado 90% CNG, iz Rossii ochen malo.

DUH?
Vladimir Belikov

Alla Kabernyuk

gosh..
ну заглохнет так, заглохнет, просто возьму тогда и удалю этот томик, so nobody wouldn't care about this as much as you do.
Alla Kabernyuk

Marina Konovalova

They often wonder: “Why have you come to Russia?” and “What’s wrong with Canada? Not cold enough?” And – gosh! - every time I get asked one of these questions my fingers go beating a tattoo on the table and my eyes roll reflexively in search of the ceiling. Just like I’m not there, you know.

No, seriously. It wouldn’t be fair saying it was a prosy series of circumstances that made me move to here almost four years back. The true reason for this shift is way deeper and therefore more cunning.

For one thing I’m one of those fellas for whom it’s too difficult to tell where their motherland is. (Nah, I’m not Jewish as one might’ve thought.) My original birthplace is Riga, Latvia. Back then it was called the U.S.S.R. and to a child’s mind it wasn’t easy to understand how that one-hell-of-a-mighty-country suddenly collapsed and shattered. My family was unlucky to be from the Russian expat community in Riga, so soon after the launch of massive anti-Russian policies in Latvia (banning Russian as the official language, education reform, etc.) we had to leave the country.

We moved to a small town in Moscow area, Russia when I was about five years old. Because there were two languages spoken in my family (English and Russian) the rents enrolled me in a specialized English school a dozen blocks away from new home(walking there every morning was sooo much of a torture I tell ya!). This is where I went to school for the first time in my life and this is where I learnt a big deal of Russian.

I basically witnessed the opening scenes of so-called “turbulent 90s” in a new country named “The Russian Federation”. I remember how Moscow streets were full of gofers, bums and beggars of all kinds. I saw the armored carriers and tanks heading towards the White House (we were on our way to my art class in Moscow when the military machines passed by). I watched the drunk ass Eltzin saying some big words on TV every evening. And, yeah, I [know] how it’s like to be robbed by a bunch of “gopnicks” (Rus. slang for “bullies”) on your way home at late evening hour.

It all ended abruptly, however, with our immigration to Canada in mid 90s. The faces on TV suddenly changed and Eltzin’s red mug gave way to Jean Chretien’s talking head jabbering something about the crisis and Canada’s record-breaking ratio of debt to GDP. Everything seemed completely different from what I’d been used to in that another far away life. There was “Thomas And Friends” instead of “Karusel” (a popular Soviet show for kids) and “Tom and Jerry” in place of “Nu pogodi!” (another popular cartoon) .

So there I was checking the empty meadows and quite harbors of Nova Scotia from behind my dad’s Ford side window. A new life began the one with a yellow morning school bus, my own locker in the hallway and Celtic music from the car stereo. The rhythm of life slowed down noticeably and it gave me a chance to tap all the wealth of information I’d gained earlier on in Russia. There was definitely more to obtain from this experience than just a new locker. And one thing I really learnt was that Russia and North America are inhabited by two totally dissimilar kinds of human species.
Glen Haynes
People of the West turned out to be sooo unlike those book and movie characters I’d known! In fact, the illusory world of action men and sexy sheroes faded as quickly as a short Nova Scotia summer. Maritime Canadians were very isolated and restrained, often anxious; some were even miserable. Seethed with the individualism cult they would never discuss something moral or aesthetic. People around lacked anything substantial to say about even extremely generic ethical questions. The default attitude was that moral choices are a matter of individual taste, where one’s morality is just a small piece of a carefully crafted individual self that one fashions at whim.

In contrast with Russians of the 90s who were in permanent earthly search of something (food, work, protection, etc.) Maritimers filled their lives with obedient compliance of the daily formalities. Even church was perceived as a mere formality though it was in Nova Scotia that the story of Evangeline took its place. It now seems that such thing as humaneness itself in the Western world has been completely traded for taxes, insurance, credit, information, human rights, touristic sites and all sorts of time eaters that are capable of consuming one’s mind and soul. Everyone there was told to be special, like the capitalism teaches one to succeed and win the competition against all others. And this is what made them all weak and flawed and hence anxious and (sometimes) miserable. True that, the marriage of this egoism to rationality – the hubris that comes with North American self-awarded status as the sole “rational animal” – this is one fatal flaw of Western civilization.

The recent legalization of gay marriages in the West could be another evidence of this all-permeating bureaucracy: the concepts of “mother” and “father” are now eliminated in favor of sexless “Parent A” and “Parent B”. Thus the gender has also become a formality and any religion is considered to be out of fashion as if it is something that hinders progress and common sense. More and more people tend to believe that religion is antisocial and generates inequality (between Christians and Muslims, Muslims and Jews, heterosexuals and homosexuals, etc.).

I once again realized this drastic difference between Russians and Canadians during one of my numerous summer trips to the Old World. I couldn’t help but notice that Russian youth (school leavers and students) loved to argue about God and religion, world order and spiritual stuff though none of them seemed to possess enough knowledge for such deep debates. Lots of Russians would say proudly: “We’re Orthodox Christians!” but very few of them could really define “orthodox” or explain clearly the difference between orthodox and catholic Christianity. However, unlike Western people whose religion lied in a stable sequence of social and financial obligations, Russians had something almost mystical behind their daily practices.
Glen Haynes
There’s some sort of metaphysical order just outside all that apparent irrationality in Russia. It’s often said that “in Russia rules are to be broken” and so it is because following rules and formalities could never be the national purpose of this country. Russians would rather go along with that all-penetrating metaphysical order that has been kept there for generations. It doesn’t have any written rules or regulations but can only be trusted in. This order draws on multiple factors (climate, historical context, geographic diversity, etc.) but the main idea is that it reflects our world as the battlefield of various forces combating for human’s soul. Within this battle one is free to decide whether to be sinful or righteous but what’s most important to be what he or she is, not what the officialdom defines him (her) to be.

Any society generates bureaucracy. It is the bureaucratic apparatus that is in charge of one’s identification in society. Bureaucracy infiltrates economy, culture, our regular everyday life. In a radical departure from western people who let their lives be driven by the rational force of overwhelming bureaucracy Russians still resist this evil and still believe there’s something beyond all the rules and regulations. By trusting in that “something” they obtain true faith that stays a mystery to the foreigners.

It has to be said I’ve been quite lucky to work for big companies and common people and see how new sort of mind evolves in the Russian bureaucratic chaos. I believe deeply that it is here that the new ideology of resistance will be forged. I might even witness the birth of this ideology someday – who knows? And this is the true reason why I’ve come to Russia.

Yours faithfully,

Glen Haynes(Moscow)
