Are people in your country happy?
Oh, those women!
They are the same everywhere.
How can you ask such a general question?
Surely, there are happy and unhappy people everywhere in the world.
Like everybody else, we like to have fun with friends.
But we also get ill and depressed, suffer from unrequited love and, in the end, we die.
I hope you don’t think that all this does not exist in our country?
All right, I admit, that was a silly question.
But joking aside...
I had something different in mind.
What I really meant to ask was if you were happy with your life, if you were satisfied with your government.
Ah, that’s a different kettle of fish.
Our country is undergoing rapid and radical changes.
We are trying to build a market economy, modernise our industry, raise the living standards.
Some things have already changed for the better.
For example, it’s easier to travel abroad now, though there is still a lot of red tape.
However, no doubt, we still have many political, economic and social problems.
There is unemployment.
There is overmanning in some industries, and the workers are being made redundunt.
The inflation rate is very high.
And, as a rule, it hits (hurts) the poor most.
But as for the future of our country, despite everything, we are optimistic about it.
Happiness is very difficult to define. (It’s very difficult to define happiness.)
Happiness can’t be measured by the amount of money you have.
Friends, for example, are more important than all the money in the world.
Now you are talking.
But on the other hand, I’m not saying that it’s good to be poor.
However, as a rule, if you start wanting money, there is no end to it.
In other words, nobody ever thinks he’s rich enough.
I’m afraid I disagree.
Let’s not argue.
Let’s agree to differ.
Some people have dreams, build castles in the air and end up with no faith in anything.
I think, to be happy it’s necessary to have ideals and believe in them.
To have an aim in life or somebody to live for.
You are right there.
I couldn’t agree more.
As for me, I like these words by Saint-Exupery.
There is only one real luxury — the luxury of human relationships.
Do you know this writer?
Have you read his books?
I’ve seen people here reading even in the metro.
It’s only natural.
Through reading people try to understand life, history, human nature.
It’s not only young people who read and study.
As they say, it’s never too late to learn.
Spiritual and cutural wealth is accessible to all.
It (spiritual and cutural wealth) can and should belong to everyone.
That’s why I believe that education at all levels should be free (of charge).
That’s absolutely necessary, in my opinion.
They say, books are quite cheap here.
They used to be really cheap.
But now general publications, for example, are reasonably cheap, and everyone can afford them.
But illustrated books, especially books on art and scientific texts sometimes cost quite a lot.
Is it true that every family in Russia has a collection of books at home?
Have you visited anyone’s home here?
No. Not yet.
That’s a pity (That’s a shame). You would have seen everything for yourself then.

— How happy are people in your country?

— What an odd question! Surely there are happy and unhappy people everywhere in the world.

— Quite. We are very fond of eating and drinking — especially in good company. But we also get sick, suffer from unrequited love...

— Aaah, Boris — come on, tell us who she is!

— Oh, I’m not talking about myself. I’m only giving an example.

— All right, I admit it was a silly question. What I really mean is: are you happy with your standard of living? Are you satisfied with your political system and your government?

— Mmm, that’s a difficult question. What do you mean, exactly?

— Well, I mean, with all those political and economic changes, do you think, your life has changed for the better? For example, is it easier to travel? Can you go abroad?

— Well... we can travel quite easily within the country, though rail and plane tickets are very expensive. And many more people go abroad now both on business trips and as tourists. But it’s still not very easy to travel abroad.

— Why not?

— You must get the correct papers. And you must queue for hours in different offices. It may take a long, long time.

— So there’s still a lot of red tape.

— That’s right. And then you must change currency and with the present exchange rate it’s very expensive to go abroad.

— Yes we are lucky because we are on an official trip. Not many people can afford to go abroad on their own.

— I see. What about food and consumer goods? Can you buy these things easily?

— Well... Food and consumer goods are not difficult to buy. You can always buy food in your local supermarket. As far as fruit and vegetables are concerned, it partly depends on the time of year. Obviously, there is a wider choice of those in spring and summer. And in winter we have to pay higher prices.

— And what about things like televisions, CD-players or washing machines?

— There are plenty of electrical shops where you can get a new TV set, a video or something like that. The choice of things to buy is much wider now than it used to be. You can buy virtually anything — a car, a flat, a house, even a plane or a yacht — if you can afford it, of course. And I must tell you, the prices really bite

— Yes, I’ve noticed the high prices in your shops.

— I think according to official statistics Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in Europe. Wages and pensions can’t keep up with the ever-rising prices. And, like everywhere else, inflation hits the poor most.

— So you are saying that you are not happy with your life.

— No, wait a minute. Are you saying that you must be rich to be happy?

— Well, at least you can be miserable in comfort! No, seriously, I know money alone doesn’t make you happy. But it’s natural for people to want a higher standard of living, isn’t it?

— Oh yes, that’s true. But we mustn’t forget our cultural and spiritual values. Yes, we should try to improve our economy and raise the living standards. But we mustn’t become too greedy.

— How can the economy improve, do you think?

— Oh, that’s another difficult question. There are many different opinions about that.

— Well, I think we, Russians, are very lazy and undisciplined.

— Nonsense! We work very hard now.

— No, we don’t work hard enough. Look at the Japanese! They never stop working.

— Well, we must have some free time. You know, all work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy.

— Now, now, let’s not argue. Let’s better agree to differ. As Igor says, there are many different opinions. Some say we should work harder. Others think the government should pay us more. But it’s difficult to manage the economy of such a big country as Russia, especially when it’s undergoing such rapid and radical changes. So there are no easy answers.

— What about your country, Judy? Are you happy with your life?

— Mmm, I suppose so. I mean, I’ve got a job and a flat and my own car, I’m lucky; many others aren’t.

— If you have a job in Britain, you are fine. But, like in some other countries, there’s a lot of unemployment. There are between two and three million unemployed in Britain today. There just aren’t enough jobs for everybody.

— That must be a real tragedy, especially for the young.

— Yes, it’s terrible. So many damaged lives. And, of course, it hurts the poor most. And don’t you have unemployment in Russia?

— Well, we do now. We have overmanning in some industries and undermanning in others. Now, as we try to build a market economy, modernise our industries and make them more efficient, many workers are becoming redundant. Our greatest challenge is to find new job opportunities for them.

— Suddenly Victor is an economics teacher!

— ( laughing ) OK, let’s turn to a lighter subject. What were we talking about? Happiness? Judy, you were saying that you were happy with your life.

— Well, many things are easier. But perhaps you were right, Victor. Perhaps, we are losing some of our cultural values. For example, fewer and fewer people read in Britain. You read a lot here, don’t you?

— Oh yes, we read everywhere. In the metro, on buses and trolleybuses. Sitting on park benches. We love reading.

— They say, books are quite cheap here. Is that so?

— Well, it depends. General publications are reasonably cheap and most people can afford them. But specialist publications, for example, books on art or scientific texts sometimes cost quite a lot.

— Mmm, it’s the same in Britain. They also say that almost every Russian family has a large collection of books.

— Yes, that’s true. Most Russians love books.
