— Ah, yes, everyone buys matrioshka dolls! Where did you get them?
— In the souvenir shop in the Arbat. Do you know it?
— Oh yes. I’ve been to that shop several times. That’s where I bought all the souvenirs I’m taking to London with me. What else have you bought?
— I’ve bought some traditional Russian scarves — they are nice and colourful and I’ve bought some small toys for my nephews — a couple of Russian spaceships.
— Ah, boys like that kind of things.
— I think so, too. And I’ve bought some Russian posters — very dramatic — and some Cuban cigars for the dean of my department at the University.
— Watch out for the customs!
— Oh, one packet is nothing. They won’t worry about that. I want to take some Russian vodka and caviar home, too.
— Haven't you bought any?
— Not yet. I’m going to buy a bottle or two of vodka and a couple of jars of black caviar in the duty-free shop at the airport.
— What else have you done in Moscow? What sights have you seen?
— Oh, I’ve seen Red Square, of course. That’s very impressive, and St.Basil’s Cathedral is amazing.
— Have you been inside the Kremlin?
— I’ve been in the Armoury. Again, that was impressive. I loved the old coaches.
— And did you go into the Kremlin churches?
— No, I’m afraid not. I did go to the Novodevichy Convent, though. So, I’ve been inside one church, at least.
— What else have you done? Have you been to the theatre or the cinema?
— Yes, I’ve been to both. I’ve already told you that I recently went to the Bolshoi to see Khachaturian’s ballet, "Spartacus". That was very exciting, very dramatic. And the day before yesterday I went there again, this time, to hear the opera "Iolanta" by Tchaikovsky. That was a very emotional experience as well, but in a different, more sentimental sort of way.
— And what films have you seen?
— Only one. I've seen a new film by Nikita Mikhalkov. I enjoyed that too.
— Pardon? I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. What did you say?
— I said I saw a new film by Nikita Mikhalkov. I liked it very much. It’s a very powerful and at the same time a very sad film.
— But did you understand it?
— Well I didn’t understand the language, at least not all of it, but I understood the story.
— Have you been to any of Moscow’s art galleries?
— Well, the Tretyakov Gallery was closed for a while, I’m afraid, so I haven’t been there yet. But I have visited the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. In fact, I’ve been there twice.
— What did you like best?
— Well, I suppose, the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists. They are my favourites. They have a wonderful collection of those at the Pushkin Museum. I bought some postcards of the paintings to give to my friends.
— So, have you enjoyed your tr
— to Moscow?
— Oh yes, very much so. It’s a fascinating place. I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time here.
— You have seen quite a lot during your short stay here, but I think, there are still plenty of other places in and outside Moscow that are certainly worth visiting. So you should come again.
— I most certainly will. Especially now that I have made new friends and have picked up some Russian words as well.
— Well, I’m sorry to hurry you, but time is passing. We should really go back to the airport if we don’t want our plane to take off without us.
— Can we have the bill, please?
— Right! Let’s have one for the road, then, before we pay and go.
— ( Everybody raises their glass. ) Well, here’s to an enjoyable trip to Britain! Hopefully, with no more delays. And to our international friendship!
