Where does this holiday come from?
Back in 17the century the first group of European settlers, who are known as the Pilgrims migrated to Massachusetts to begin a new life. They set up their village on the land that had been abandoned by the Wampanoag. The Wampanoag had lived in the coastal area of Massachusetts and Rhode Island for thousands of years. They used to move from one place to another in order to plant crops, fish and farm. When the Pilgrims migrated, the Wampanoag taught them how to develop the lands. Eventually, they shared dinner which was stated as the first Thanksgiving meal.
How is it celebrated nowadays?
Ideally nowadays families all over the USA and Canada get together to share a good time and delicious meals. They can’t imagine Thanksgiving dinner without some particular dishes like roasted turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pies, green beans and cranberry sauce. Each of these parts has a special historical meaning.
Interesting fact! The U.S. Presidents pardon turkeys. It symbolizes the start of the Thanksgiving period and is done on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving day. Presidents have an official rule that they can use to grant pardons for offenses against the US. It is a formal process and is written into the constitution.
