What do you think about this story? For me it is sad story...
Before she could speak or even understand their words, the little girl's parents held her in their arms and told her that she could do anything. Dream big, they say; shoot for the stars! From that moment on she believed it; she can do anything.
In kindergarten she learns more and more about the world and all the amazing things that exist within it. People really can do anything, she learns. They can heal the sick, discover amazing new things, and build incredible structures. The world seems so full of possibilities and she knows she can do any of them.
In grade school, each year the teacher asks "what do you want to be when you grow up" and each year the girl writes a different answer (astronaut, doctor, scientist, engineer, writer, artist, CEO) as she considers her options, which are limitless. She learns about our planet and different cultures and discovers a desire to see the world. Of course she will, she can do anything.
In high school she finds some courses more boring and some more interesting. She learns about the world around her and herself as a person and decides on a goal. It's a lofty goal and one that will take a very long time to accomplish. In addition to this lofty goal, she has plans to experience as much of the world as she can, as many different cultures and places and beauties of the world as possible. Her family and friends, behind her as always, tell her she can do anything; she knows she can.
This continues through college and she works her hardest to make her dreams come true. Everyone praises her for her hard work and diligence in achieving her dreams. She never doubts herself because she knows she can do anything.
Suddenly, the girl notices family and friends no longer support her. They no longer tell her to dream big and shoot for the stars. The supportive faces that once told her she can do anything now tell her she must do only one thing: have children. Her dreams and passions that were praised all her life are now scorned as selfish, even lazy. It's time to put your dreams away, they say.
For the first time ever, she doubts herself. Everyone now says that this is her dream and her goal. This is her life now.
So she puts her plans aside, stops pursuing her education and gives up on seeing the world. She finds a man and soon after they have a child.
Holding her newborn baby in her arms she tells him "you can do anything."
Satish Kumar
Hello everyone=))
Ekaterina Suntsova
I agree, it's a sad story. Many people are in this situation, I think. And sometimes, not your parents or friends but life says "Put your dreams away. Your are a usual person, nothing special. You'll have a usual work and usual life like many other people". It's my case. I dreamed to be a designer, to create amazing collections of fashionable clothes. Now I work from 9 to 18 five days a week. Life showed me I didn't have enough talent and didn't work hard enough. But now I'm trying to change my life and to prove that I deserve something more interesting.

Best of luck to you.

Sergey Nasyrov
hi! Why did you decide to chat here to practice your English? How about talking to native speakers? ))
Vsevolod Rhydon
It should be "practise", not "practice", as it is a verb, not a noun.
Alexander Listopadov
Можно и так и так, не имеет значения. Practice и practise оба глагола имеют одинаковое значение.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Нет. Practice — это существительное, а practise — это глагол. Почитайте в Интернете правило. То же самое и с advice и advise.
Alexander Listopadov
Я правило знаю. В случае с Practice это исключение. Можно и так и так писать и ошибкой это не будет.
Alexander Listopadov
Можно сами удостовериться http://grammarist.com/spelling/practice-practise/
Vsevolod Rhydon
Ссылка нерабочая. В любом случае, с точки зрения грамматики, я прав.
Alexander Listopadov
http://www.grammar-monster.com/easily_confused/practice_practise.htm вот еще
Vsevolod Rhydon
"In the US, you can use practice for noun and verb. In the UK, you must use practice for the noun, and practise for the verb." Ну так вы используете американский английский. Правильный английский — британский английский. А если американский, то нет проблем.
Alexander Listopadov
Да причем тут ваша точка зрения... это разница между UK и US English, просто везде лепят британский английский, в Штатах уже с 19 века не говорят to practise, везде practice. Штатовскую литературу читаешь там везде такое.
Alexander Listopadov
А кто сказал, что правильный британский, это кому как хочется. Но ошибки опять таки повторюсь тут нет!
Vsevolod Rhydon
Да причём тут ваши Штаты, когда речь идёт о правильном, британском английском.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Потому что американцы исковеркали нормальный английский язык. Хотите говорить на их языке — ну флаг вам в руки!
Alexander Listopadov
Может она тоже на американском захотела написать? Если я вместо block of flats буду appartment building говорить, тоже скажете, что ошибка?
Alexander Listopadov
Вот не надо.. на британском сейчас говорят только в UK, Canada и местами в Australia, во всём остальном мире предпочитают US English.
Alexander Listopadov
К тому же повторюсь это личное предпочтение каждого, почему же у нас в России тогда на корректном русском языке не говорят?
Vsevolod Rhydon
Большинство людей тоже неграмотно во всём мире, так что неудивительно, что они сделали свой выбор в пользу американского английского.
Alexander Listopadov
В любом случае повторюсь, это не является ошибкой, даже на экзамене.
Sergey Nasyrov
right you are! On the other hand, there is american verb "practice", and my T9 corrected my "practise" what I didn't notice. So, the first variant is British one (that's why it is pronounced with 'z' sound in English - a consonant between two vowels) and the second one is American (a consonant before 'e' sounds like 's'). You can use both of them. It depends on what variant of English you prefer. Nevertheless, thank you))
Sergey Nasyrov
и американцы ничего не коверкали. Каждый язык развивается своим путем. В Великобритании, Австралии, Сша, Южной Африке, Индонезии, Новой Зеландии, Канаде свой вариант английского. Каждый из этих вариантов считается лингвистами за отдельный, самостоятельно развивающийся язык.
Sergey Nasyrov
На "британском" можно говорить везде, где вам захочется. Но не забывайте, что если вы достаточно хорошо владеете языком, относиться к вам будут как к "иностранцу, говорящему на posh English", что равно почти как к британцу. А их далеко не везде жалуют.
Follow Dream
"Чистый" британский язык плюс русский акцент - это адская смесь)))
Никто вас не поймёт ни в штатах, ни в Англии)))
Vsevolod Rhydon
ну это смотря на каком экзамене. Вот у нас в школе это является ошибкой.
Vsevolod Rhydon
а Вы к кому обращаетесь? Если ко мне, то у меня нет русского акцент, к счастью. Мне это говорили в Англии, а также мои одноклассники.
Sergey Nasyrov
Sergey Nasyrov
And guys, the topic of the group is "chat only in English". So, let's speak English even if you argue.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Ну хорошо! Хотя я замечал, что у меня акцент не такой уж РУССКИЙ, как у многих русских, особенно у моих одноклассников.
Sergey Nasyrov
if you want to improve your prononciation study it more properly at first. Such book as "sheep and ship" will help you. Besides, you can also take Merkulova's book and study a theory. She'll tell you where to put your tongue in your mouth while pronouncing a certain sound and also about British intonation.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Thank you so much! That'd be really useful. Besides, did you mean "mouth" when you wrote "mouse"? Or was it just ironic towards Russians who can't pronounce "th" properly?
Sergey Nasyrov
it was fucking T9, again. I hate it. It does not allow me to write quickly. I'll switch it off forever
Sergey Nasyrov
And, Vsevolod, "irony". "Ironic" is an adjective. By the way, it would be a good idea, but Russians tend to pronounce "th" like "F".
Vsevolod Rhydon
Well, I actually meant adjective. Not sure if it was spelt right.
To be honest, I've never heard them pronounce "th" like "f" expect for "three". In other words they usually pronounce it like "z" or "s".
Alexander Listopadov
тогда у вас просто учитель принципиальный или возможно не образованный (чаще встречается в наше время)..
Vsevolod Rhydon
нет, учитель у нас образованный, просто в школе преподаётся британский английский, а не американский английский.
Alexander Listopadov
Это верно, но считать такое ошибкой нельзя. Это как если ты в русском говоришь "молоко" вместо "малако", так конечно уже мало где говорят, но всё же, это не ошибка.
Sergey Nasyrov
switch off T9 if you use it. If not - "eXCept for". Okay, they pronounce it in a various way. "Ironic" can be a human, so the question will be: "Was you ironic writing/spelling..." but "Was it an irony when you wrote..."
Vsevolod Rhydon
All right, thanks, I'll remember it.
"Except", right, it was a typo.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Считать такое ошибкой нельзя было бы, если бы нас учили американскому английскому, а учат нас британскому английскому.
Sergey Nasyrov
it is a stylistic mistake, not grammatic as I've already written above. If it is a language school or a school with a language specialization, they can count it as a mistake.
Sergey Nasyrov
By the way, "specialization" is also one of those words. I wrote it in English. In american english it will look like "specialiSation")))
Alexander Listopadov
My teacher never saw such things to be mistakes, though our school was specialized in languages and computer science. She never said that choosing "lift" instead of "elevator", or "truck" instead of "lorry" is a mistake. Or pronouncing "place" in American English, rather than in UK's.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Я читал, что такие слова с "s" и с "z" уже не являются американскими или британскими. Но также в той статье были приведены некоторые слова, которые является американскими, когда с "z", и британскими, когда с "s". Так что лично для меня с "s" являются британские слова, я всегда так пишу. Surprise, например.
Sergey Nasyrov
these are not the same mistakes. "Practice" or "practise"is a question of spelling. " Lift" or "elevator" is a question of choosing words. It is bad to mix differrent variants of English. A guy using English, American and Canadian words at the same time sounds ridiculous and funny. It is good that their teacher pays attention to these nuances as her task is to teach British English. Later her students can choose any variant, it is up to them, but they will know the standards. You don't use Moscow Russian and Tatar Russian in one sentence, do you?
Sergey Nasyrov
always look at the sourse of any information. We can't trust to everything. If you can find the article, tell us the authors.
Alexander Listopadov
I use a lot of Russian dialects in my speech (not in writing though), I myself am from the Caucasian region, and our teacher there simply taught us English, she taught us to think and dream in English. And as a teacher she did give us standards too, British English of cause, but as I said in previous post, she didn't correct our choices, she explained them to us.
Sergey Nasyrov
for example, you say "канавка" instead of "арык", right?
Alexander Listopadov
Excuse me, but I say neither )))
Sergey Nasyrov
how do you call them then? )))
Alexander Listopadov
If you mean the word "канава", then I mostly call 'em "яма" )))
Sergey Nasyrov
anyway, we should be flexible. Your teacher taught you so and you teach others in tghe same way. The teacher of Vsevolod's teacher taught them differently and his teacher also uses her teacher's method. Each of you are students of different methods and it does not mean that only yours or his opinion is wrong or, vice versa, right.
Sergey Nasyrov
i mean "канал")
Alexander Listopadov
Right! It's just that others may think that writing "to practice" is incorrect, but it's not.
Alexander Listopadov
Канал и есть канал.
Sergey Nasyrov
Alexander Listopadov
Yup
Follow Dream
вы сами себе верите? Люди могут двадцать лет прожить в англоязычной стране и иметь акцент.
Когда я только переехал в штаты со своим корявым английским на уровне школы, мне тоже говорили, что либо акцент почти не заметен, либо его нет. Вам тоже могут сказать всё что угодно.
Акцента возможно не будет, только если переехать в англоязычную страну в возрасте лет до десяти. Тогда по мере взросления и роста, гортань будет формироваться под этот язык.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Так это зависит от гортани? А самому же разве нельзя что-то сделать, чтобы изменить акцент?
Follow Dream
пока ни у кого не получалось. Может, вы будете первым в Мире)
Vsevolod Rhydon
Я посмотрел в Интернете на то, что называют русским акцентом, и смею заявить, что мой акцент вполне приличный.
Follow Dream
какой бы он не был... приличный / не приличный, но он есть.
Follow Dream

Vsevolod Rhydon
но есть же способ избавиться от акцента. И да, вы правильно сказали: акцент есть, но вопросом в том, насколько он слышен/заметен.
Follow Dream
если АКЦЕНТ ЕСТЬ, то он уже и слышен и заметен.
Естественно у кого-то он отвратительный, а у кого-то не особо раздражает. Но он есть. И местные жители всегда его будут слышать, даже если сам человек не замечает свой акцент.
Follow Dream
способ есть. РОДИТЬСЯ В ЭТОЙ СТРАНЕ или ПЕРЕЕХАТЬ В СТРАНУ ЕЩЁ РЕБЁНКОМ.
Что вас так парит наличие вашего акцента. Я уже давно не парюсь с этим. Есть и есть. Этого не изменить. Что ж теперь ... застрелиться что ли?
Vsevolod Rhydon
Ничего, я найду способ и потом расскажу.
Sergey Nasyrov
лучше изучите хорошо этот язык, культуру, сами развивайтесь в плане кругозора и интеллекта. О вас тогда будут думать как об образованном иностранце, очень хорошо говорящем на английском языке и знающем его. И ничего плохого в этом нет - вся Америка и Европа состоит из таких.
Sergey Nasyrov
Follow Dream
не найдёте.
Вы свой акцент сами никогда не услышите.
Vsevolod Rhydon
Аудиозапись? Не, не слышал.
Follow Dream
при чём тут аудиозапись)))) хоть аудиозапись, хоть видео. Вы не native-speaker, поэтому акцент свой никогда не услышите.
Что вы спорите как ребёнок?
Извиняюсь, сколько вам лет?
Vsevolod Rhydon
На аудиозаписи можно услышать себя. Ведь даже когда говоришь что-то, не слышишь своего голоса. Именно поэтому на аудиозаписи можно услышать свой реальный голос, не тот, который мы слышим, когда что-то говорим.
Follow Dream
Good bye kid. Keep calm and learn English
Vsevolod Rhydon
