Yeah i think you are right, that was a stupid thing to say,but still I am allowed to have my own opinion and you don't have to agree with it. Who said that I am English or American ? As you said it's obvious that I am Russian . I just meant that it's strange to talk in English with Russian speakers when I usually talk in Russian!

A chat without a topic is not a chat. It is not even a bla-bla-bla. It's just bubbling or burping words. Without sense, without consequence.

My suggestion for this "discussion" thread. Anyone can throw in a topic. It can be anything sensible, like something you've seen on TV or have read in a newspaper or on the Internet, or have heard on the radio. And the author may or may not ask a question or several questions. Then anyone else can answer questions of the author of the topic, ask his/her own questions to this topic, or offer his/her opinion on it. And then anyone can offer another topic. It will look like talking of many chatterboxes recorded in writing, but it will be better than what you have now in this thread.

I'll give an example.

I've heard on the radio that wild animals are occupying New York. Scientists say that it does not look like they are just came for a brief visit, more likely, they decided to settle in the city. Those occupants are racoons, deers, and many other, even coyotes. Wild animals compete with traditionally urban animals for food and habitat. Also they impose danger to humans. Recently many racoons and several other animals were tested for rabies and found positive. People are recommended to stay off those quties from the wild life. Wild birds are also a big problem. Not long ago an airplane, which flew through a flock of Canadian geese, nearly crashed, and was saved only due to the experienced pilot, who landed it into the Hudson.

My questions: Is this information plausible? Do you think wild animal life in modern cities is good or bad? Would you like to see bears and wolves in the streets of Moscow or other Russian big cities? I invite your questions too (though I do not promise to answer them all).

My opinions: This information is scientifically plausible, though I believe not every New-Yorker ever met a live racoon (let alone a deer or a coyote). That pilot who landed the airplane into the Hudson is a really cool man. Those who think they are cool because they say "wassup, man" and "mazafaka", are no match to that pilot.

You can say either. I usually say "I'm an American". Additionally, I also sometimes say "I'm American". Not as frequently, though.

I wish I had the technical knowledge of grammar to support my answer, but I do not. But believe me, both are correct.

It is known that, typically, a mini-bus consumes only twice as much fuel as a car, but a mini-bus can carry 12 to 18 people to their workplace, while a car, typically, carries only its driver. So, mini-buses are 6 to 9 times more fuel-efficient in terms of transportation of 1 person at a distance of 1 km, than a typical car. Do people think of this when they choose transportation means? What implications are possible in relation to toxic emissions and other possible issues, like traffic jams, parking problems etc.? Do you think it is necessary to limit people in their wish to use their cars? Or should people limit themselves?

You may add any other aspects of this issue.

To my mind this theme is not interestimg for teenagers. It is dull and difficult for people who wants to improve their English.I haven't read your topics for conversation but I think that most likely your themes are not attractive for youth.

As for me, I don`t use any kinds of drugs. I hate this very much. I think that it must be a very strict punishment for selling and spreading narcotics in Russia. It should be the death execution for it.

"to carry on" means "to continue", usually with a scent of struggle, of overcoming.

"carry on well" is a part of a phrase, or a context, which you've preferred to withhold. Most likely, this part of the phrase means something like "continue well, despite the difficulties".

So, if you all (in the US South abbreviated as y'all and grammatically incorrect) wish to improve your English then what should a native English speaker do to help? I can certainly correct a lot of grammar and spelling. But you can easily look up the spelling. It is all very understandable - but there are many things that can be improved. How would you expect to get such feedback on this board?

As for the person saying Spanish is a second language in the US -- this is somewhat true. Cuban, Mexican and Puerto Rican immigration has lead to a great deal of Spanish in the US. It is particularly evident in the Southwest (TX, AZ, NM), California, Florida and New York City. And it is true that most Americans can read simple Spanish. But it is still far from a second language. Americans have little use for a second language and it is actually hard to learn another language there (as is also true in New Zealand). When native English speakers travel it is even hard these days to learn simple phrases... because other people either do or want to learn English. So if I try to speak the language of the country I visit, people generally answer me in English.

There are plenty of people who are pretty happy without bothering learning more than enough English phrases to get around.

I remember an old joke. An American woman explained how Americans communicate with the world. She said: "When we come to another country, and somebody talks to us in the local language, we say: Speak English. When in the US a foreigher tries to talk to us, and we cannot understand him/her, we just say: Speak up!"

Svetlana... 10 years ago when I travelled to non-English speaking countries I would learn all kinds of "tourist English"... can I have a glass of still water, where is the bathroom, how much does it cost, where am I, etc, etc. I would learn to read basics on a menu. I had to or I could not get around. Now it has come to the point where there is either no need to - or people in their willingness to be helpful simply speak in English to me. That willingness to be polite to me in effect makes me lazy - so I do not learn. The only place recently I had to try was in Russia... and because the alphabet is so challenging that was nearly impossible for me. Where has there been absolutely no need for a foreign language you ask -- all western Europe, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kenya, Tanzania. Where has there been minimal need for the foreign language -- Madagascar, Japan, China. These are just examples. In fact it is common for people to seek out English speakers and try and practice speaking with us -- I found this especially true in China.

I agree not everyone is willing to learn another language, and English is somewhat a necessity rather than a desire. But reading some of these posts it seems like people genuinely feel some affinity for the language and want to speak it. I know people are trying to be polite to speak English to me -- but I would like to try to be polite and speak their language. I used to put a lot of effort in this before a trip... now I don't -- because I rarely even get a chance to try. And to be honest I no longer have the time before I go - I barely have time to plan the trip nonetheless study any of the language.

Vladimir - yes the joke reflects what I consider the ugly American tourist (which applies to many countries other than the US). As an English speaker I attempt not to do that... to at least learn please, thank you, you're welcome... but to be honest... these days it just isn't worth the effort and when I do not try I feel rude. In business I have to telephone many other countries... I hate it when they answer in their language and then I stammer as I answer in English... it seems so rude of me. But in my firm all employees globally are required to speak English.

I have spoken to many Americans in the past and some have struggled to understand fully the 'Queens English'. I've never fully understood this? Might be an accent thing, or maybe my speech is poor?

Queens English is faster than American English. It also depends on the accent. Brits would struggle with thick American southern drawls, for example. Brittish humor is also significantly different. I know that speaking to a Scot with a thick accent in a bar is a struggle, but without the background noise of the bar... no problem. Speaking to an American New Englander can be hard without concentration. Or someone from Newfoundland can be really hard.

Svetlana -- I did not mean "tourist English", I means "tourist" in whatever language I needed for my travels. So I know a lot of "tourist Spanish", "tourist Italian", "tourist German"... I know much more French and Norwegian... but still annot really speak the languages. I am studying Russian a bit now.

Simon - I realize now you are from Russia. I would venture to guess the problem in understanding you is mostly about your accent. A Russian accent on top of British phrases and such would be awkward for an American. Your written English seems fine though. I expect your accent is not British at all -- but Russian. A Russian accent is very thick. There is almost no difference in the words between American, British, New Zealand, Australian, South African, Canadian, etc (the Indians are actually the most different - because it really isn't their native language). There are a few different idioms, a few different colloquilisms, but not much and English speakers mostly know the variants. Spelling is also different - the Americans made a point of changing some spelling just to insult the Brits after the revolution. If you learned to speak English from a Scot - then I would expect your accent to be quite odd and hard to understand.

Yury- Do mean the words spoken or the accent. If it is the words then surely there are differences in the way they are spoken by the particular individuals you have listed and not just the indians. Each of those individuals would say those words in a different way. The sound is different!

There are different accents across the countries and within each country. There are some words that are different - but not too many. Example - Americans and Canadians say flashlight whereas Australians and Brits say torch. There are some different spellings. Examples -- Brits and Australians write Colour whereas Americans write color. Candians are somewhere inbetween -- but I would say they are more like Americans in most ways except maybe spelling. New Zealanders are more like Australians and Brits. Indians are their own dialect... but closer to British. But there are tons of different accents... most are easy to understand. The harder ones are thick US southern accents, Scots, Ireland, Indian. And of course it depends on the person. The sound is not significantly different but sometimes enough to make it hard to understand.

Please excuse my typos - I see one already... Canadian not Candian.

The only accent I have is an English one. Im not from Scotland, Ireland or Wales, but London. I have not either a London accent 'innit!!!'. Just an English one.

I think then it is just the speed at which you talk. Americans all know the words like lift, rubber, boot, bonnie, torch... they know the alternate meanings. They know many of the idioms too.

how can you have just an "English" accent? there is no such thing unless you can imitate any variation of all the English accents. ppl from different English speaking countries speak with different accents, even in different parts of the same country. If you are from London, and you speak perfect English, then you have a British English accent.

I think that we think of "proper" London English (not cockney, for example) as an English accent. We call the Brits - English men and women. Whereas there is a standard American accent as well - the one you hear from most American news anchors (Americans would say it is American without any accent - and it is pretty midwestern I suppose). Clearly there are other accents within each country - but there is the "basic" one too. So there is American w/o an accent - then there is an American Southern, Manhattan, New England accent.

She has had the lunch....
1.- "She had the lunch"... at some point but not in the immediate past she did eat the lunch.
2.- "She has......." refers to an action that happened in the past, any action
3.- If asked about a who already had the lunch the answer is "She has had the lunch" as in: "She already has attended the lunch activity" earlier in the week or "She has already eaten her lunch earlier"

Certainly, not too many people know what and where Konosha is. Why would not you explain this? Is this a town or a village? How large (or small) is it, how many people live in there? Where is it situated? What is the nature around this place - mountains, fields, forests etc.? What is the weather like there in winters and in summers? What kind of people live there? And whatever you could say more about Konosha.

Konosha's population is about 20,000 people. There are many swamps around this place. Unfortunately, our nature hasn't mountains. But there are great forests! Also there are many fields. Weather is quite normal for our climate. Winter is moderately cold, summer is moderately hot. People? I don't know how say about them)Maybe..They are such as in other towns)But you don't must to think that Konosha is hole) Because it is not such)My town is big junction. Russia has seen a recent political change or shall i say no change. The western media has stated that there has been some tampering with the polls. Can anyone enlighten me with their views please.

I do not know much about Russia and its presidential elections. I do not know if there were cases of vote rigging (I've heard statements that there have been some). Nevertheless, I see an objective indication of dissatisfaction of the Russian people with the current power holders: many people, too many, 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, voted for the candidate from the Communist Party. This is a serious indication that many Russian people are fed up with "democracy a la russe".

Cause there is no democracy, just the word. Actually, very many Russians voted not "for" anybody but "against". Of course unsuccessfully.

I work as a teacher of English at a secondary school:)))) Frankly speaking, it is so great to work with children))) I didn't think I would like this job, but I can't imagine my life without it now)))

I have heard in Australia that on their voting forms, there is a box you can mark that states "none of the above". I.E. you do not want to choose anyone from the people/parties on offer. I have a feeling that in the UK, people have started to vote for silly parties as an objection to the main parties. I wonder what would happen here and in the UK if you were allowed to vote for no one? Last week in the UK, a total outsider took the seat in a local by election. This has certainly raised afew eyebrows.

in Ukraine there is such an option of not supporting any of the candidates. At least, has been. I've heard the Parliament plans to abolish it. Statistics shows that not too many people use it, typically, 2 to 4 percent of those who come to the polling station. This is slightly more than the rate of spoiled bulletins (some people spoil bulletins by mistake, others intentionally). Those who are not interested in politics altogether simply do not participate in the elections (these make 15 to 25 percent).

In the UK, there are only 3 'main' parties. 2 are the real options, with the remaining one gaining ground over recent years. This remaining one now shares Government with one of the mains. In more recent times, I think the citizens of the UK are increasing of the opinion that these parties only appear to benefit themselves. The idea of rich becoming richer, poor paying more taxes. This now would appear that it has reached a point where by the usual 'no hope' parties are beginning to take parliamentary seats and gain ground. What started as an objection vote against the main parties, now seems to be putting slight extremest parties in. I wonder where it will end?

Democracy fails as soon as the demos gets relaxed. What may follow is not a secret. So far we know two options - communism and Nazism. Both options, by the way, had been favored by the rich (or by some of them), who thought that "the order" would put the plebs in their deserved place. In both cases the rich failed to predict the outcomes for themselves. In both cases the plebs suffered more, but the rich suffered a lot too. In both cases the bloodshed was for the rich as well as for the plebs.

The rich are in some control (as they may think), this is in their interest to maintain the impression in the plebs that the plebs can influence their own lives. When the rich fail to provide this (being absorbed in getting richer), then we get the classical revolution situation by Vladimir Lenin: "The upper strata cannot, the lower strata do not want (to maintain the current order of things)".

I know, I am writing of terrible things. But this is how things work.

Where do I know this from? I learned the Marxist-Leninist theory being a university student in times of the Soviet Union. We had several compulsory courses on the subject.

A very good posting. I think it shows that between different countries, we all have very similar problems. The parties maybe called different names and offer different agenda's, but at the end of the day, the outcome would appear to be the same. It was report a couple of weeks ago that the former Prime Minister Tony Blair had filed his tax return, stating that years earnings were in the region of £12 million, yet was allowed to write off £8million as “administrative expenses”. He paid £312,000 in tax, on £12 million !!! Not a very good example to set the rest of us. Its this type of practice that is fueling the unrest I feel.

He was advised by a very professional firm of accountants on how to set up his own companies, to reduce the tax he pays. It was reported a few weeks ago, 5 independent accountants looked at his figures to work out how his tax was so low. Not one of them was happy that they had the answer, but they all agreed it was such a complex arrangement on setting up his companies, that the answer layed there. This is someone who has gone to extraordinary lengths to reduce paying tax. What a fine example our former PM sets. What hope for the rest of us?

In Ukraine things are somewhat different, though very much the same. If you looked at the income declarations of our top figures (and they are obliged to publish the declarations according to the Law), you would see that these people are not rich, their personal incomes are within 2 million Ukrainian hryvnas (about USD250 thousand), their assets are quite modest. But everybody knows they drive personal cars worth USD200 thousand and more, wear wristwatches worth 20 thousand to 200 thousand US dollars, flash Vertu mobile phones in gold or platinum casings and with ruby buttons, and enjoy entertainments far beyond any reasonable or imaginary limits of luxury. And many of them have several palaces exceeding in wealth royal palaces of medieval Europe. All this does not belong to them, according to their declarations. What, then, all this luxury is? Bribes from big businesses or money stolen from the people whom they are supposed to work for? I believe, both. And these highly moral people explain us on TV how they care about us, especially before elections.

Sounds the same as UK politicians. Although a politician earns a good enough wage, most of them are shareholders or on the board of 1 or more other companies. This boosts their earnings considerably. Im sure having a politician as a board member considerably enhances any business. Im beginning to see the error in my career choice)))))

I think there is something wrong in my profession too. We get young students, most of whom are good-natured, some are mildly delinquent, but in general, they are naïve and kind. We try to teach them good things and try to put some knowledge in their heads. And then some of them become politicians… It makes me feel ashamed.

actually, I have known this from my youth. In times of the Soviet Union it's been a part of school and university education, and I believe the first time I heard the phrase "The rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer" was when I was 10 years of age. That phrase was applied to capitalism and capitalists.

At some point we were made to believe that that was "communist propaganda" and in fact, in capitalist countries (in the developed ones, in particular) the poor were becoming richer all the time. That was just a few years before the fall of the Soviet Union.

Probably that was true 30 to 15 years ago, to some extent. But, from what I hear on the BBC and read on the Internet I conclude that after the fall of the USSR things started rolling back to the classical description of capitalism by Karl Marx and of imperialism by Vladimir Lenin.

The recent economic crisis has speeded up this rolling back substantially. I wonder if this crisis could have been designed and orchestrated for this very purpose. Of course, one cannot see a single center, which could have done this. The obvious cause of the crisis was human greed. Some people wanted to get too many consumer goods and too large houses quick, others wanted to earn a lot on providing loans and mortgages. But it's so easy to excite greed in people and make them value a chance to get rich quick more than long-term stable growth, and this could have been done on purpose.

I understand my above words look like another conspiracy theory, and, most likely, the crisis was not planned and orchestrated, it's just that when it started, the rich just took the advantage of the situation to get richer at the expense of the rest.

In either case, this situation and its development causes social tension, which may result in nasty consequences, up to revolutions and civil wars or to coming to power of ultra-right or ultra-left totalitarian regimes through "democratic" elections. It looks like the "spectre of communism" that was haunting Europe (and was spotted by K. Marx and F. Engels) some 150 years ago is out and about again.

I've watched a few parts of "House MD", and have found them rather interesting. But I have not liked TV series in principle since the times of my military service, when it was impossible for me to plan my working hours in advance and to choose a series, of which I could watch most of the parts.

While growing older I've noticed that I've started to lose interest in movies altogether, though I still like some old movies and very few new ones.

Everyone who thinks that watching movies and TV series in English is a good method of learning English should be aware that there are three basic skills: listening, speaking and reading. And you have to develop all these skills separately, because listening does not develop speaking and reading, reading does not develop listening and speaking, and speaking does not develop reading and listening. Writing skill is a derivative from reading (but you still need to practice writing separately from other skills). Watching movies helps to develop only listening.

Listening skill is the most difficult one to develop to me. It's my personal opinion. I've been training this skill for several years aleready but it still seems hard to me to understand everything that people say. But I think it's not beacuse I can't recognise the words. It's just the problem of my vocabulary. The more words I learn the more unknown words are left))

I am rather pessimistic about lively discussions in this group, but you may try.

Scientific evidence would require a few independent researches with wide discussions among scientists (not among public). It's a multi-parametric problem, not only the fact of a child being brought up in a gay marriage is to be considered, but alternatives for this child (which are different in different countries) and attitude of the society to such marriages and to bringing up children in them (which is, again, different in different societies).

After thinking it over, I believe that a gay couple could be a better alternative than an orphanage for many children (statistically, as anything may happen in a particular case). But exactly in those countries where orphanages are especially terrible, gay couples would not be tolerated by the society and a laughing stock would be made out of their children in schools.

By the way, I do not believe that a gay couple would definitely bring up a homosexual child, because such things are not directly determined by upbringing.

My problem is that I do not live in post USSR area and hence know little of current problems of youth. For example gay marriage out here instantly sparks a debate, but I am unsure of what would be a russian alternative. How come you speak (write?) such good english? How long have you studied it?

I started to learn English seriously over 25 year ago. Seven years had passed before I decided that my English had become good enough for practical use. Since then I've been using it, and improving it when I can. I have never been in an English-speaking country.

As for the attitude to gay couples (and gay people in general) in the post-Soviet territories, it's rather negative. I am not much interested in this problem; therefore I do not monitor the legislation on the matter. I can only guess, and my guess is that gay marriages are not legal in most post-Soviet countries, let alone upbringing of children by gay couples.

Attitude to drugs, strangely enough, is quite tolerable. It's a subject of many jokes, despite the fact that drug addiction destroys lives and kills many people here. Even people who have never taken any drugs like such jokes. On the other hand, there are people, who are dissatisfied with the position of the state, when the police formally fight the drug dealers, but actually covers them up.

Stem cells are an issue for the very rich here. There are some private clinics, which, half-secretly, offer some stem-cell treatments for rejuvenation. However, no significant scientific research is done here (as far as I know) because of generally low financing of science.

Abortion is also a common topic for jokes. Attitude to it is quite tolerant (in my view, I have not done any researches). Though, recently the Orthodox Church have begun to claim substantial influence in the State (which is against the constitution claiming that we are a secular society), and the Church insists on prohibition of abortions. Some politicians support this attitude.

Uk released a documentary about Euro 2012: The hate stadium. It showed many polish and ukrainian youth showing nazi ideology and making racist remarks against the jews, blacks and asians. There was a scene where they started beating asian people who were supporting the home team for no apparent reason. Is there wide spread racism in Ukraine?

What the hell are you talking about, here I haven't seen any kind of racism, I'm living in Kyiv for about 20 years. Of course,if you'd like to go somewhere around the city at night, you'll probably get in trouble. But it could happen not just here, right? Everywhere. I met people from Washington D.C. last week, they lived here for 2 years and they told me that they feel themselves more safe in Kyiv at night than in Washington. And yeah, one of them is black, afroamerican. If you don't want trouble, and you behave like a guest, you'll be safe. Just be intelligent and patient. And find yourself someone, better a friend here before coming, who would be able to be your guide etc. Don't be afraid, welcome to Ukraine :)

Well...drugs... That's a big problem now for a lot of teenagers. A lot of people at the age of 18 who r already serious drug-addicts. I think it's lame, stupid, ucool, UNHEALTHY! People want to live a happy life... But how can they when their body is already poisoned?!
The main problem now is that many teenagers are too trustful and careless, unconcerned about the future... It makes me sad :C

Thanks for your reply. I think the success of Euro2012 and the fact there were no major racial incidents conveyed the true message. The media put everything out of context. But I know there are area within Kiev that no black or Asian would venture.

There are just few districts here in Kiev, that you shouldn't visit at night. And it doesn't matter are you black or white. It's not like Harlem or smth like that. On Euro 2012 everyone saw that such problem almost not exist here at all. Racism is bigger problem in Russia, I guess. Especially for asian people.

In 2008 there was huge media coverage of racial attacks on minorities in Moscow. It has slightly reduced but it is still present in Moscow and St Petersburg. I know each country has elements of racisms but in Russia it's very open. However, I haven't visited Russia so can't speak from personal experience. I'm sure not everyone is like the White skinhead gangs!!

You're probably right. I can't really remember the question itself but it's always better to simplify :)

Yep,agree) But in this case there are phrases "to have lunch,to have breakfast,to have dinner" and the like,which are used with no article,4 instance:He has had supper.And your previous phrase was She has had the lunch.I believe,you'd better omit " the" here not just to simplify,but it must be so according to the stict rule))

Today here it was cold, It's rain...But ok.Well, I adore reading, because I adore books) In my room I have many books in French, in English and even in German).I speak French well, so the most of my books are in French, I read many books in French because my speciality is a foreign literature(French), I read only one book in German(Erich Kastner-"Das doppelte Lottchen"it's about two girls who were sisters, it was interesting but not easy to read in German), and yesterday I began Oscar Wilde"The Plays"in English(My friend gave me this book at my birthday,so on holiday I have time to read it and I'm really glad!).My the most favourite book in French is "Une page d'amour(one page of love)"by Emile Zola. And if you want to know my opinion I think that read in foreign language is verry important and interesting. Sometimes I mark some words)))And do you read in English? Lagune...Tell the truth I don't like German very much, I ' m crazy about Arabian and Turkish languages, by the way I can read in Turkish and I hope that the next year I'll learn Arabian in my University).It's my dream. I also like Spanish, it looks like French).
I adore reading, dancing(Belly dance) and of course studying the foreign languages).I like traveling, for example I travel around my nice country(I was in Vitebsk and in Grondno), I was also in France and in German...and in Ukrain(in Odessa and in Ternopol-in Ternopol I took part in the Championship of the world(Belly dance)in November 2010.

I prefere reading French classical literature, I adore Emil Zola. But I read the books besides French. I read in French and in Russian, I adore my native language, some days ago I read the book of Vasil Bikov, it’s great! Now I’m reading two books(yes, I like to do that). The first one is Muriel Barbery”Delicacies”- I read it in Russian and the second is “The plays of Oscar Wide”-I read it in English.
During my holidays in France I visited Paris, Dijon, Cosne-sur-Loire, Nevers and Versaille, it was unforgettable!...so amazing and romantic…In Germany I was in Berlin, but I had no chance to see this city…I regret it…
Belly dance…yes, it’s my passion). I started to dance at the age of 16, so…in August it will be 6 years).
I can tell you that my French is really good, it’s my first foreign language and I adore French, I passed DELF(B2)some months ago, my German…it’s not very good, but I can speak German. Hi everybody. My name is Jale. I am Azeri. I know the Russian, the English, the Turkish and the Azerbaijani languages. I know Russian because I'd lived in Russia for 12 years, I study English at school and Turkish is very similar to my native Azerbaijani language. Well, still I have one more year to study at school. I still have not decided who I want to be, but I know as whom i could work during the summer. Not long ago, I was on holiday in Turkey. Most of me there was the work of animators. All u need to work as an animotor is knowledge of english and of course , turkish. What I liked in this work, for animators, it is exactly like the resort, just rather paying, they are paid. Imagine, sea, pool, free food, free drinks, fun, and most important thing is 1000 $ per month. You just need to comunicate with people , trying to make their holidays even better :)

I am russian from Russia:P I've been learning english for all my life and sometimes I think that I will never learn it!:( But sometimes I feel like I am a master of learning any languages..So...I am a student of institute in Rostov-on-Don. I am studyig ecomonic but I think it's not what I want...it's just a safety. I like reading books..a lot...I can't understand people who tell that they don't read books at all...it's insane and stupid not to read, It's my view. Maybe this is my upbringing:) I don't know actually. I just think that books make us better. They are my friends since I was 6 and I have been still keeping reading. It's a so wonderful feeling when you are in different world. Watch a different life( in your mind), you agree or not with person in there...Think if you did the same thing...It's an interesting dispute inside of you...This is my opinion:)

I agree with you, Ann. I think books develop our outlook:) A person who didn't read any book in his life is rather stupid.
Few years ago I read different books, but now I don't have enough time for it) I read them, but not so often)

As for me, I don't like reading. This may sound crazy but... Whatever. I know, books give us a lot of wisdom and experience, show people's thoughts and feelings etc. But I can't choose books for myself, I don't know WHAT to read now, modern literature just don't get my attention, and that's sad, you know. All those vampire stuff makes me go insane, but classic also isn't my fav type of literature. So, I'm kind of lost. But what I know for sure is that people who don't like reading or just don't have enough time for it aren't STUPID (as it was said in the previous post by Inna).
